Your Moon Sign Is Not Your Sun Sign

Gochar and Sade Sati use the Vedic Moon sign. A Western sun sign is a different zodiac. Festivals follow tithi, not either label.

By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated

A festival does not care that a magazine calls you a Leo. Makar Sankranti cares where the Sun is. Karwa Chauth cares where the Moon rises. Sade Sati cares which sidereal sign your natal Moon occupies. Those are three different facts, and the sun-sign column collapses them into one animal.

Chandra rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth in the Lahiri zodiac. It changes about every two and a half days, so two people born the same week often do not share it. Lagna, the rising sign, changes every two hours. A remedy article written for “Leo” on this site means Simha Chandra, the Moon, unless it says lagna. If your app says Leo and your pandit says Karka, believe the one who states the ayanamsa and the birth time.

Festivals are not horoscopes

You can keep Diwali without knowing your Moon sign. You cannot judge Sade Sati without it. The phase pages start at Sade Sati. The sign itself comes from a free Kundli with date, time and place.

Questions people keep asking

Which sign do these remedy notes use?

The Vedic Moon sign. Lagna can move the houses. The kundli is the check.

Why does my Western app disagree?

It uses the tropical zodiac and usually the Sun. Jyotish uses Lahiri and, for gochar, the Moon.
