Janmashtami 2027 Turns on Midnight

Krishna Janmashtami 2027 is 24 August where ashtami holds midnight, and 25 August in many Vaishnava lists. Fast with your own tradition.

By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated

Krishna is remembered as born at midnight on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami. In 2027 many lists put that midnight on Tuesday 24 August. Vaishnava calendars that need ashtami to cover the whole midnight often print Wednesday 25 August.

A temple will keep the watch it has always kept. A housing-society poster will keep whatever an app showed first. If you are fasting, fast on the night your sampradaya names. Do not tell a Vaishnava house it is a day late. Their midnight rule is older than the app.

A festival retells a birth. A kundli reads a person.

By late August 2027 Shani is in Mesha and Guru is direct in Simha. Rahu is in Makara. None of that is “Krishna’s chart.” A child born that midnight has a lagna you calculate. The child does not inherit a story in place of a chart. That distinction is the whole of why a festival birthday is not a yoga.

Questions people keep asking

Why do the dates disagree?

Because ashtami must hold midnight. If it ends before midnight in one reckoning, the fast moves to the 25th.

Which date should I fast?

The date your tradition uses. Smarta lists lean 24 August 2027. Many Vaishnava lists lean the 25th.
