Pitru Paksha 2027 Is for the Fortnight, Not a Mood

Pitru Paksha is Bhadrapada’s dark fortnight, ending on Mahalaya Amavasya in late August or early September 2027. Offer to the person you can name.

By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated

Pitru Paksha is the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada. It ends on Mahalaya Amavasya, which in 2027 falls on 31 August in one month-grid and in the first days of September in others. The shraddha is offered on the tithi of the ancestor’s death, or on the amavasya if the tithi is unknown.

A son in Patna has been told by a neighbour not to buy a vehicle, not to cut hair, not to start anything, for fifteen days, as if the fortnight were a curse. It is a fortnight of feeding. You offer water and food to a named person. You do not freeze a city. New auspicious starts are traditionally postponed. Ordinary work, medicine, and a child’s school are not shraddha.

Name the person

The rite fails when it becomes a generic fear. If you know the tithi, use it. If you do not, Mahalaya covers the unknown. Shani is in Mesha through this fortnight in 2027. That is a transit, not the reason the paksha exists. The paksha would exist in a year with Shani in any sign.

A birth chart question about a parent is still a chart: free Kundli, and if the duty is heavy, talk to a Vedic astrologer.

Questions people keep asking

Can you start a job during Pitru Paksha?

Ordinary duty continues. Traditionally, weddings and other new shubh starts wait. A job you already have does not pause.

What if you do not know the death tithi?

Offer on Mahalaya Amavasya, the last day of the fortnight.
