Why a Pythagorean Name Number and a Chaldean Name Number Disagree

Pythagorean and Chaldean letter charts disagree, so one spelling gets two totals. RAVI is 23, root 5, on the first chart and 10, root 1, on the second.

A name number adds the value of each letter and then reduces the total. Pythagorean numerology runs the Latin alphabet in cycles of 1 to 9, so A is 1 and I is 9. Chaldean numerology values letters from 1 to 8 only, and no letter is 9. The spelling RAVI is therefore 23 in the Pythagorean chart, which reduces to 5, and 10 in the Chaldean chart, which reduces to 1.

Both totals are checkable arithmetic. Neither total is evidence that a spelling will succeed in business or in marriage. Practitioners use a name number as a label for the name a person actually carries. A Kundli still has to answer whether a legal rename falls in a dasha that can bear the paperwork. The life-path sum, which ignores the letters, is a separate article: how a life path is calculated.

How does the Pythagorean letter chart work?

Count A as 1 through I as 9, then start again at J as 1. R is 9, S is 1, and Z is 8. The chart is alphabetical. It is the system modern Western books call Pythagorean. It is not a table copied from a surviving book by Pythagoras. That history is in a short sourced history.

ValuePythagorean lettersChaldean letters
1A, J, SA, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, TB, K, R
3C, L, UC, G, L, S
4D, M, VD, M, T
5E, N, WE, H, N, X
6F, O, XU, V, W
7G, P, YO, Z
8H, Q, ZF, P
9I, RNo letter

Ten letters share a value in both charts: A, B, C, D, E, J, K, L, M, and N. The other sixteen differ. A long name almost always produces two totals. Ignore spaces, punctuation, and case. Decide the spelling before you add. A name on a passport and the name friends use are two strings.

Worked example: RAVI, then RAVI SHARMA

Pythagorean RAVI is R=9, A=1, V=4, I=9. The total is 9+1+4+9=23. Then 2+3=5. This article calls that full-name total the Pythagorean name number, also called the expression number in many Western books. It is not the life path, and it is not the Indian bhagyank.

Chaldean RAVI is R=2, A=1, V=6, I=1. The total is 2+1+6+1=10. Then 1+0=1. Chaldean readers often keep the compound, here 10, as its own layer, and also report the root 1. This article does not import the Pythagorean master-number pause into a Chaldean total. Ten is not kept as a special case. It reduces to 1.

The fuller spelling RAVI SHARMA widens the gap. Pythagorean values sum to 47. Then 4+7=11. You may report 11 if you keep master numbers, or reduce once more to 2. Say which. Chaldean values sum to 26, then 2+6=8. One person, one spelling, two roots: 2 or 11 on one chart, 8 on the other. Picking the prettier root after seeing both is not a method.

A further Pythagorean split counts vowels and consonants separately. For RAVI the vowels A and I are 1+9=10, root 1, and the consonants R and V are 9+4=13, root 4. Some books call the vowel total a soul urge. That split is optional, and it is still Pythagorean. The Chaldean total in this article is the whole name. Y is a letter value either way when you sum every letter. Treating Y as a vowel matters only in the vowel split, and only when the spelling uses Y as a vowel sound. MAYA shows Y moving the total by itself: Pythagorean M=4, A=1, Y=7, A=1 sums to 13, root 4. Chaldean Y is 1, so 4+1+1+1=7.

What the two totals are for

Practitioners compare a chosen spelling with a date number from their own school, then suggest a letter more or less. That advice is traditional use. It does not prove the new spelling will be received well by a bank, a family, or a registrar. If the question is a name on a signboard, keep one chart and read business name numerology. Why 9 can sit on the Pythagorean chart and still leave a root unchanged, while Chaldean withholds 9 from every letter, is in why 9 is complete.

Questions people keep asking

Why is RAVI a 5 and also a 1?

Because the charts disagree on R, V, and I. Pythagorean RAVI is 23, root 5. Chaldean RAVI is 10, root 1. A is 1 in both. The rest of the name is not.

Which chart should I use for a name?

Pick one and show the sum. Pythagorean is the repeating 1 to 9 alphabet. Chaldean is the 1 to 8 table above. An answer that mixes a Chaldean total with a Pythagorean keyword list has changed systems in the middle.
