Synastry and Kundli Matching

Synastry compares two Western charts by cross-aspects. Ashtakoot Kundli matching scores two sidereal Moons out of 36 points.

Synastry and Kundli matching answer different questions about two people. Synastry compares two Western charts by the aspects one person's planets make to the other's. Ashtakoot matching, the usual North Indian Guna Milan, scores the two sidereal Moons out of 36 points. A warm synastry aspect is not a guna score, and a guna score is not a Western compatibility essay.

In synastry you calculate both tropical charts, then you look across them. One person's Venus on the other person's Moon is a classic contact in modern synastry: affection landing where the other person feels safe. Mars on Mars can read as shared drive or as a fight about pace. The aspect rules are the Western ones, conjunction through opposition, with an orb. The reading is a description of chemistry in that language. It is not a marriage licence, and a single sweet aspect does not carry a relationship by itself.

Take Maya's Venus at 12 degrees of tropical Taurus and Arun's Moon at 14 degrees of tropical Taurus. That is a conjunction in synastry, Venus on the Moon, within a tight orb. The sentence stops there. Their Ashtakoot score needs something this example has not supplied: both Moons in the Lahiri zodiac, placed in nakshatras. The eight kootas, varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot, and nadi, are mostly lunar. A perfect Western Venus-Moon contact can sit next to a modest guna total, or the reverse. Adding the numbers together across systems does not produce a better number.

A fuller Jyotish match also looks past the 36 points, at Mangal dosha, the 7th house, and the dashas of both charts. Families sometimes treat 18 out of 36 as a pass mark. That threshold is a custom, not a law of the sky, and a high score is not a guarantee of a peaceful marriage. A low score is not a verdict by itself. The same modesty belongs on the synastry side.

What to compute

For the Western question, ask for tropical synastry and name the house system. For the Jyotish question, run Kundli matching from both birth times and places, and read the Ashtakoot table as a screening aid. The Moon that the kootas use is the subject of the Western Moon sign only after you convert zodiacs. When the score and the family's question need a person in the room, talk to a Vedic astrologer with both charts, not with two sun signs.

Questions people ask

We are both Scorpios. Is that compatibility?

It means two tropical Suns fall in the same sign, if that is the zodiac you mean. Synastry still wants the Moons, the rising signs, and the cross-aspects. Ashtakoot wants the sidereal Moons and their nakshatras. A shared sun sign is the smallest fact in either method.

Is 36 out of 36 a perfect marriage?

It is a full Ashtakoot total on those eight factors. It does not include every Jyotish test, and it does not promise a life. People remain free to choose.

Can I convert synastry aspects into guna points?

No. They are different procedures. Report the synastry in tropical terms and the Guna Milan in Lahiri terms, side by side, if you want both.
