The Western Personal Year Number and the Nine-Year Cycle

A Western personal year adds birth month, day, and calendar year, then reduces to 1-9. For 15 November, calendar 2026 is 9, or 8 until the birthday.

A personal year number is a Western, Pythagorean nine-year cycle: birth month, birth day, and the calendar year you are asking about, reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9, without keeping 11, 22, or 33. For a 15 November birthday, calendar 2026 reduces as month 2, day 6, and year 1, and 2+6+1=9. On 6 October 2026 the birthday-to-birthday method is still on the previous cycle, which reduces to 8. The two clocks disagree until 15 November.

The life path uses the birth year and stays put. The personal year swaps in the year you are living and moves. Both are Pythagorean date arithmetic. Neither is a transit of Guru, and neither is a Vimshottari bhukti. If someone calls 2026 "your Saturn year" because a personal year digit matched a numerology list, they have changed the subject. The fixed birth-date sum is in the life-path calculation.

How do you calculate the personal year?

The method in this article, stated up front: reduce the birth month to one digit, reduce the birth day to one digit, reduce the four digits of the calendar year to one digit, add those three digits, and reduce again to 1 through 9. Master numbers are not kept. November is 11, and 11 reduces to 2. You do not pause.

Universal year 2026 is the year alone: 2+0+2+6=10, then 1+0=1. Everyone shares that 1. It is the backdrop, not your personal year. Your month and day pull it to a private total.

15 November, calendar method for 2026. Month 11 reduces to 2. Day 15 reduces to 6. Year 2026 reduces to 1. Then 2+6+1=9. If you refuse to reduce November and you add 11+6+1=18, you still reach 1+8=9. On this particular year the master pause would not change the final digit. The declared rule is still "reduce the month." Other years can split, which is why the rule has to be visible.

Calendar year versus birthday to birthday

One school runs the personal year from 1 January through 31 December. That is the method that gives 9 for the whole of 2026 in the example above. Another school runs it from birthday to birthday. Under that second school, the 2026 personal year begins on 15 November 2026. Until then, the cycle in force is the one calculated with 2025.

2025 reduces as 2+0+2+5=9. Month 2, day 6, year 9: 2+6+9=17, then 1+7=8. So on 6 October 2026 a 15 November birthday is in personal year 9 by the calendar rule and personal year 8 by the birthday rule. After 15 November 2026 both rules, for this person, say 9 until 31 December, and then they diverge again in January. Report the boundary with the number. A bare "you are an 8" in October, from a calculator that assumed birthdays, is not wrong inside its own rule. It is incomplete if the rule is hidden.

Practitioners describe the nine digits as a sequence of themes that restarts after 9: a 1 year for starts, a 9 year for finishing, and the digits between for whatever keyword list that book prefers. Those themes are Western teaching. They do not move Jupiter. In 2026 Guru's actual transit is an astronomical fact you read from an ephemeris or from a Kundli, not from 2+6+1. Indian bhagyank, for comparison, keeps the birth year in the sum forever. The personal year throws the birth year out. Same family of addition, different inputs. See bhagyank if the birth year is what you meant to add.

Questions people keep asking

What is the personal year for 15 November in 2026?

By the calendar-year method in this article, 9. By the birthday-to-birthday method, 8 until 15 November 2026 and 9 after it. Both are Pythagorean. Say which clock you used.

Is a personal year the same as a dasha?

No. A personal year is month plus day plus calendar year, reduced. A dasha is the Vimshottari period from the Moon's nakshatra. One can be computed from a birthday. The other needs the sky.
