Diwali 2028 Shares a Day with Narak Chaturdashi

Diwali 2028 is Tuesday 17 October. Several panchangs put Narak Chaturdashi on that same day. Dhanteras is 15 October.

Lakshmi Puja in 2028 is Tuesday 17 October, Kartik Amavasya. Dhanteras is Sunday 15 October. Bhai Dooj is Thursday 19 October. Chhath’s main evening offering is around 23 October. What startles people is Narak Chaturdashi: several panchangs put it on the 17th as well, the same civil day as Diwali, rather than the day before.

A family that “always does Choti Diwali on Saturday” will be wrong if they mean the weekday and not the tithi. Abhyang snan in the morning, Lakshmi Puja at night, can share a date when the tithis are short. Follow the panchang’s split of morning and evening. Do not skip the oil bath because the poster only printed one word, Diwali.

The lamps do not need a new theory of Saturn

By October 2028 Shani has been in Mesha for months. Diwali is still an amavasya of Kartik, a lunar dark moon, Surya and Chandra conjoined. It is not Shani’s festival. Light the row. Buy the utensil on the 15th if that is your Dhanteras. Leave the fear-based “grahan shopping” for years that actually have an eclipse on the night. This one does not.

Compare the drift of the date with Diwali 2027 and Diwali 2026.

Questions people keep asking

When is Dhanteras in 2028?

Sunday 15 October 2028. Diwali is Tuesday 17 October. Bhai Dooj is 19 October.

Why is Choti Diwali on Diwali day?

Because the chaturdashi tithi can fit into the same civil date as amavasya. Morning bath, evening puja. Your city’s panchang prints the hours.
