From a Sun Sign to a Vedic Chart

A sun sign is not a Vedic chart. You need birth date, time, and place, then the Moon sign and the Vimshottari dasha.

By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated

A sun sign is not a Vedic chart. If you know only that you are "a Gemini," you know the tropical Sun for most of a thirty-day range. A Jyotish chart needs the birth date, the birth time, and the birthplace, and the first thing it will hand back is usually the Moon, not a confirmation of that Gemini.

Start with the record you actually have. The date is on certificates. The time is the fragile part: a hospital slip, a parent who remembers "just after the milkman," or a rounded hour. Write the uncertainty down. "6:40 a.m., plus or minus ten minutes" is a usable chart. "Morning" is a guess at the Lagna. The place should be the city, not the country, because the eastern horizon depends on latitude and longitude. Then ask for Lahiri sidereal positions, which is the zodiac behind the Kundli on this site. A tropical chart with Sanskrit labels is still a tropical chart.

Read three lines before you read anything else. The Chandra rashi is the Moon's sidereal sign. That is what relatives mean by "your rashi," and it is the sign gochar is counted from. The nakshatra is the Moon's finer mansion, 13 degrees and 20 minutes wide, and its lord starts the Vimshottari dasha. The Lagna is the rising sign, and it is the line that moves if the birth time is wrong. A worked contrast: 14 May is a tropical Taurus Sun in ordinary date tables, because the Sun is then between the April ingress into Taurus and the May ingress into Gemini. That sentence does not tell you the sidereal Sun, which may be Aries if the degree is still inside the ayanamsa window of about 24 degrees. It tells you nothing at all about the Moon. The person born that day might have a Kanya Moon, a Makara Lagna, and a Budha mahadasha. Or none of those. Only the time and place decide.

What to open next

Once the Moon and the Lagna are in front of you, timing is the Vimshottari dasha, not a second look at the sun sign. The reason the Gemini nickname and the rashi came apart is in why the sun sign and the Vedic rashi differ. If you also want the tropical Moon for comparison, that measurement is the Western Moon sign, requested under its own zodiac.

Questions people ask

I do not know my birth time. Is a Vedic chart impossible?

The Moon sign is often stable across a few hours, unless the Moon is about to change signs. The Lagna is not. You can still discuss the Moon, the nakshatra, and the dasha lord, and you should say that the houses are unknown. Inventing a noon chart and treating the Lagna as fact is a worse answer than a partial one.

Which of my two signs do I tell an Indian astrologer?

Tell them the birth data. If they ask for a rashi and you only know a sun sign, say "tropical Sun" and the sign name, so they do not enter it as your Moon.

Will the Kundli confirm my sun sign?

It will compute a sidereal Sun, which matches the tropical sun-sign name only when the Sun is in the last part of that tropical sign. Confirmation is the wrong hope. A second, named placement is the real result.
