Why Your Sun Sign and Vedic Rashi Often Differ
Tropical and sidereal zodiacs differ by the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24 degrees. In India, rashi also usually means the Moon, not the Sun.

Your Western sun sign and your Vedic rashi often differ for two separate reasons. The zodiacs start about 24 degrees apart, and the word "sign" points at the Sun in the West while the word "rashi" in India usually points at the Moon.
The tropical zodiac is tied to the seasons. The sidereal zodiac is tied to the stars. The angular gap between them is the ayanamsa. This site uses Lahiri, the sidereal offset common in Indian Jyotish. In 2026 that offset is a little over 24 degrees. To move from a tropical longitude to a Lahiri longitude, subtract about 24 degrees. A Sun at 10 degrees of tropical Aries lands near 16 degrees of sidereal Pisces. A Sun at 8 degrees of tropical Aries, which is a late-March birthday about a week after the equinox, lands near 14 degrees of sidereal Pisces, Meena. The Western column says Aries. The sidereal Sun is still in Pisces. The same rule runs through every sign: when the tropical planet is in the first 24 degrees or so of a sign, the sidereal sign is the previous one. When it is in the last 6 degrees, the sign name often matches. The cutoff is a longitude, not a printed week, and the exact degree needs the time of day because the Sun moves about one degree a day.
The second reason is which body people mean. A magazine "I'm a Leo" is the tropical Sun. An Indian "my rashi is Kanya" is almost always the sidereal Moon, Chandra rashi, the sign used for gochar and for a first look at matching. The Sun and the Moon are in the same sign only some of the time. A person can truthfully be a tropical Leo Sun, a sidereal Cancer Sun, and a sidereal Virgo Moon. Three labels, three different facts. None of them cancels the others.
How to say it without a fight
Name the zodiac and the body. "Tropical Sun in Leo" and "Lahiri Moon in Virgo" can both be right on one birth. What fails is the sentence "you are a Leo, so your Kundli Lagna is Simha." The season math behind the 24 degrees is in equinoxes, solstices, and tropical Aries. What the two systems still share is in what Western and Vedic astrology share. If you have a date, a time, and a place, the Lahiri chart is the Kundli, and the path from a sun sign alone is from a sun sign to a Vedic chart.
Questions people ask
Which one is my real sign?
Both phrases can be real if you say what they measure. The tropical Sun is a season placement. The Lahiri Moon is a star-based lunar placement. Dropping the adjective is what makes them look like rivals.
Is the ayanamsa exactly 24 degrees?
About 24, and a little more than 24 on the Lahiri value in the mid-2020s. It grows by roughly one degree every 72 years. A precise chart uses the value for the birth year, not a rounded slogan.
My sun sign and my sidereal Sun are the same name. Why is my rashi still different?
Because rashi, in ordinary Indian use, means the Moon. Your Sun can sit in the last few degrees of a sign, where the names match, while the Moon is in another sign entirely.
