Griha Pravesh in Margashirsha 2026
A house-entering after Diwali 2026 should wait out the two retrogrades, then take a muhurat. The festival lamp is not the griha pravesh.
By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated
People like to enter a new flat during Diwali week because the building is already lit. In 2026 that week is 6 to 11 November, and Shukra and Budha are both retrograde until about 13 November. A griha pravesh is a one-way event. You do not return the house the way you return a utensil. Prefer a muhurat after the 13th, inside Margashirsha, once Chaturmas has ended if your family treats house-entry like a shubh start.
The five checks still apply: tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, lagna. The owner’s chart matters if the question is “will we stay.” The flat’s facing is architecture. Jyotish does not need to insult the architect to ask for a clean tithi.
Do the lamp. Book the entry later.
Light Diwali where you already live. Carry the kalash into the new flat on a day you can explain to a priest. The muhurat stack is five checks. The owner’s period is a Vimshottari Dasha analysis.
Questions people keep asking
Is Diwali day a griha pravesh?
Not in 2026, if you can choose. The retrogrades run until about 13 November. Enter after that, on a real muhurat.
What if the builder gives only one date?
Take the keys when you must. Do the ceremonial entry, the one with the kalash, on the muhurat.
