How a Sun Sign Is Derived

The sun sign is the Sun's tropical longitude at birth. Aries starts at the March equinox, and each sign is the next 30 degrees.

A sun sign is the 30-degree slice of the tropical zodiac that holds the Sun at the moment of birth. English-language horoscope columns mean this measurement, and only this. The count starts at the March equinox, not at the stars of the constellation Aries.

The ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path through the year, is a circle of 360 degrees. Tropical astrology sets 0 degrees Aries at the instant the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. That instant is the March equinox, on or about 20 March. The following 30 degrees are Aries, the next 30 are Taurus, and the same step of 30 degrees continues through Pisces. Whichever block contains the Sun's longitude is the sun sign.

A birthday makes the arithmetic concrete. On 28 March the equinox is about eight days behind, and the Sun moves roughly one degree a day, so the Sun stands near 8 degrees of tropical Aries. A Western column calls that birth an Aries. The city does not change the Sun's longitude. Everyone born at that same Universal Time shares it. A second case: the Sun enters tropical Leo on or about 22 or 23 July, so a birth on 4 August has the Sun about twelve degrees into Leo. That is a Leo sun sign in ordinary years. Printed date ranges are a shortcut. On the day the Sun changes sign, the clock decides. If the ingress falls at 11 p.m. and the birth is at 11:40 p.m., the sun sign is the later one.

What the calculation uses

The birth date is enough on every day except a sign-change day, when the time matters. The birthplace converts a local clock into Universal Time. It does not move the Sun into another sign. The rising sign, the Moon, and the houses are different measurements, and a sun sign does not include them. This site's Kundli uses the Lahiri sidereal zodiac, whose start sits about 24 degrees from the tropical start, so the same Sun can carry another sign name there. That comparison is why a sun sign and a Vedic rashi often differ. The four season markers that anchor the tropical signs are in equinoxes, solstices, and tropical Aries.

Questions people ask

Is the sun sign the constellation I was born under?

No. A tropical sign is a 30-degree season block. The constellation of the same name lies about 24 degrees away, which is the precession of the equinoxes on the Lahiri value used in Jyotish.

Can two people born on the same date have different sun signs?

Only when the Sun changes sign that day and the two birth times fall on opposite sides of the ingress. On every other day the sun sign is shared.

Does a birthplace change the sun sign?

It changes how the local clock reads one moment in Universal Time. It does not change the Sun's longitude. It does change the rising sign, which needs both the time and the coordinates.
