Western Transits and Gochar
A Western transit is a current planet aspecting a birth planet. Gochar reads the sidereal sky mainly from the natal Moon.

A Western transit and a Vedic gochar both describe planets moving now. A transit, in Western practice, is a current planet making an aspect to a birth planet or a house cusp in the tropical zodiac. Gochar is the sidereal sky, read in Jyotish mainly from the natal Moon's sign. Same morning sky, two reference frames.
"Saturn square natal Sun" is a Western transit sentence. It means transiting Saturn has reached a longitude about 90 degrees from the birth Sun, within an orb the astrologer allows. The signs are tropical unless the astrologer has said otherwise. The sentence is about an angle. It expires when Saturn moves out of orb. It does not mean Saturn is sitting in a particular house from the Moon.
A gochar sentence sounds different. "Shani is in the eighth from Chandra rashi" means sidereal Saturn, on the Lahiri zodiac, is eight signs from the birth Moon. The count is by signs, and the aspects are graha drishti, not a Western square. Jupiter's entry into sidereal Leo on 31 October 2026, the Lahiri ingress used on this site, is a gochar date. Jupiter's entry into tropical Leo is a different day, because the two Leos do not begin at the same star. Quoting one date under the other name shifts the calendar by the ayanamsa, about 24 degrees of sky, which for a slow planet is months.
A person can feel both frames if someone is careful. Transiting tropical Saturn square the tropical Sun is one statement. Saturn in a given sign from the sidereal Moon is another. They can overlap in time without being the same aspect. Dasha decides how loudly Jyotish hears the gochar. A Western transit reading has no Vimshottari period unless the astrologer imports one.
How to keep the dates honest
Ask three things: which zodiac, which point at birth the moving planet is being compared with, and which aspect rule. Sun against Saturn by degree is Western. Moon by sign is the usual gochar. The 24-degree reason the ingress dates split is in why the sun sign and the Vedic rashi differ. Saturn's two famous clocks are separated in Saturn return and Sade Sati. The daily rashifal here follows the Vedic frame, so a tropical sun sign is a poor key for those pages.
Questions people ask
Do transits work from a sun sign alone?
A column can transit "for Leos" by speaking to every tropical Leo Sun. That is a broadcast. A transit to your Saturn, your Moon, or your ascendant needs the birth chart.
Is gochar the same word as transit?
Gochar means the planets' current motion, and in Jyotish it is judged from the Moon on a sidereal chart. Using the English word "transit" for both hides the zodiac and the reference point.
Which slow-planet date should I trust this season?
Trust the date that names its zodiac. A Lahiri ingress and a tropical ingress are both computable. They are not interchangeable.
