What a Sun Sign Describes, and What It Leaves Out
A sun sign sketches conscious style and vitality. It does not name the Moon, the rising sign, a Vedic rashi, or the timing of an event.

A sun sign describes the style of the conscious self in modern Western astrology: vitality, the qualities a person tends to identify with, and the way attention wants to move. It does not describe the whole chart, the emotional habits of the Moon, the manner of the rising sign, or the timing of a job, a marriage, or a move.
Picture two people who both have the Sun in tropical Leo, the sign the Sun occupies for most births from about 23 July to about 22 August. One has the Moon in tropical Virgo and Capricorn rising. The other has the Moon in tropical Aries and Gemini rising. A Sunday column speaks to both of them as Leos. In a full Western chart they share a solar topic and very little else. The first chart is careful and reserved in its first impression. The second arrives quickly and talks with its hands. Calling both "a typical Leo" keeps the Sun and throws away the rest.
Popular writing uses the Sun because it is easy to know. The date is on every form. The Moon needs an ephemeris, and the rising sign needs a birth time and a place. Columns, apps, and party conversation filled that gap by letting one factor stand for the person. Psychological astrologers in the Western tradition still treat the Sun as a centre of purpose. They read it beside the Moon, the rising sign, and the aspects. A one-line horoscope is the Sun with the rest of the chart switched off.
A fair use, and a strained one
A fair use sounds like this: "Your tropical Sun is in Libra, so the Western language for your solar style is balance, partnership, and a dislike of crude confrontation." A strained use sounds like this: "Libras will receive a contract on Thursday." The first is a description of a symbol. The second pretends one planet-in-sign is a calendar. The rising sign and the Western Moon sign are the next two pieces if the sun sign felt too thin. The daily pages under Horoscope on this site are Vedic rashifal, not a tropical sun-sign column. Read them as that, or start from a chart.
Questions people ask
Is the sun sign my personality?
It is one Western description of solar style. Personality, in either tradition, is the whole chart. People with the same sun sign diverge as soon as the Moon, the rising sign, or the aspects differ.
Why do sun-sign horoscopes feel vague?
They are written for about one twelfth of the population, using a single placement. A sentence that must fit every Leo has to stay general.
Should I ignore my sun sign?
Keep it as the tropical place of the Sun. Use it when the question is solar style. Ask for the Moon, the rising sign, and a timed chart when the question is more specific than that.
