Rising Sign and Sun Sign

The rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. The sun sign is the Sun's place that day. They match only by chance.

By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated

The rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the tropical sign on the eastern horizon at the birth moment for that latitude and longitude. The sun sign is the tropical sign that holds the Sun. They answer different questions, and they match only when the Sun happens to be in the sign that is rising.

The horizon changes through the day. The full zodiac rises in about twenty-four hours, so a new sign rises roughly every two hours. The interval is uneven: at higher latitudes some signs rise faster than others, and far enough north or south a sign can rise very quickly. A two-hour error in the birth time is often enough to change the rising sign. It is rarely enough to change the sun sign, because the Sun takes about thirty days to cross one sign.

Two colleagues born on 4 August 1992 both have a tropical Leo Sun. One was born at 7:10 in the morning in Chicago. The other was born at 7:10 in the evening in the same city. They share a sun sign. They do not share a rising sign, because twelve hours later a different part of the ecliptic is on the eastern horizon. A stranger meeting the morning birth and the evening birth is meeting two different ascendants, even though a magazine would greet both as Leos. The morning chart and the evening chart can still be Leo in some other way. The point is that the clock, not the shared birthday, chooses the ascendant.

What each one is for

In modern Western reading the sun sign carries purpose and vitality. The rising sign carries the stance of the body, the first impression, and the sign that opens the first house. Many people say the rising sign "feels more like me" once they see it, because other people meet the ascendant before they meet the Sun. That reaction is a clue, not a test of the chart. Without a birth time you can still know the sun sign on most days. You cannot know the rising sign. A Kundli on this site needs the same time and place, and it will not reproduce a tropical ascendant, because the Lahiri zodiac begins about 24 degrees away. The solar measurement itself is how a sun sign is derived. A calm order for the whole wheel is in how to read a Western birth chart.

Questions people ask

Can I find my rising sign from my birthday?

No. You need the birth time and the birthplace. A date-only calculator is guessing the ascendant.

What if my birth time is uncertain by an hour?

Treat the rising sign as provisional. An hour is often inside one sign and sometimes across a boundary. The sun sign is usually safe. Say the uncertainty out loud before anyone builds a reading on the ascendant.

Is the rising sign the same as the Vedic Lagna?

They are the same kind of measurement, the eastern horizon, taken in different zodiacs. A tropical Leo ascendant is not automatically a sidereal Simha Lagna. Subtract the ayanamsa before you translate the name.
