How to Read a Western Birth Chart

Read a Western chart from the rising sign, then the Sun and Moon, then houses and aspects. Keep it tropical. It is not a Kundli.

By Avinash ChandanPublished Updated

Read a Western birth chart as a tropical wheel, in a named house system, starting from the rising sign. It is a complete Western figure. It is not a Kundli, and relabelling its signs with Sanskrit names does not make it one.

Confirm the birth data first: date, time, place, and the time zone that place used that day. Then confirm two settings that programs hide in a menu. The zodiac should say tropical if you asked for a Western chart. The houses should say whole sign or Placidus, because those two systems can put one planet in two different houses. If the header says sidereal or Lahiri, you have opened a different chart. Close it and start again, or read it as Jyotish on purpose.

The order that keeps beginners honest is short. Note the rising sign and its planetary ruler. Note the Sun's sign and house. Note the Moon's sign and house. Then walk Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, each with its sign and house. Then note the major aspects among them: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition. If the chart prints Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, read them after the seven classical bodies, not instead of them. A Leo Sun in the 10th house, square Saturn, is already a full Western sentence. You do not need a slogan on top of it.

Here is a paper example, not a person. Tropical ascendant 12 degrees Virgo, Sun 18 degrees Leo in the 12th whole-sign house, Moon 3 degrees Taurus in the 9th. The rising sign is Virgo, so the chart meets the world in a Virgo style. The Sun is still Leo, so the solar style is Leo, placed in a house of retreat rather than on a stage. The Moon is Taurus, so the feelings prefer steadiness, and in this house system they sit in the house of travel and belief. None of those three sentences is a prediction. None of them is a Lagna, a Chandra rashi, or a nakshatra. Subtract about 24 degrees and every one of those sign names may change. That subtracted wheel is the start of a Lahiri chart, which then needs its own rules.

What you will not find on the wheel

A standard Western chart has no 27 nakshatras and no Vimshottari dasha. The nodes may be labelled North Node and South Node rather than Rahu and Ketu. The 1st house begins at the tropical ascendant, not at sidereal Mesha. If you want that other figure, follow from a sun sign to a Vedic chart. House systems are compared in the 12 houses, and the aspect names are in the five major Western aspects.

Questions people ask

Can I read my sun-sign column as if it were this chart?

The column is the Sun's sign, broadcast to everyone who shares it. The chart is the rising sign, the Moon, the houses, and the aspects for one birth time. They overlap at the Sun and then diverge.

My Western app says Leo rising. Is my Lagna Simha?

Only if the Lahiri ascendant is also in Leo. A tropical ascendant in the first 24 degrees of Leo usually falls in sidereal Cancer. Look at the longitude, then subtract the ayanamsa, before you translate the name.

Which planet should I read first if I am in a hurry?

The rising sign, then the Sun, then the Moon. A hurry that skips the rising sign has reproduced the sun-sign column and called it a chart.
