The 12 Houses in Western Astrology

Western houses are twelve life topics counted from the rising sign. Whole sign and Placidus can put the same planet in different houses.

The twelve houses are twelve fields of life, counted from the rising sign around the chart. In Western astrology the sign shows a style and the house shows the topic that style is applied to. A planet in Leo in the 10th house is a different sentence from the same planet in Leo in the 4th.

Most English-language chart books use this list. The 1st house is body, manner, and the start of any meeting. The 2nd is money, possessions, and what a person values. The 3rd is siblings, speech, writing, and short trips. The 4th is home, parents, and private roots. The 5th is play, romance, children, and creative risk. The 6th is daily work, service, and health routines. The 7th is marriage, business partners, and open one-to-one opponents. The 8th is shared money, intimacy, death, and what is inherited or owed. The 9th is long travel, higher study, law, and belief. The 10th is career, reputation, and public responsibility. The 11th is friends, groups, and gains. The 12th is solitude, hidden costs, and what is hard to see. Medieval and modern authors move a few of these topics, especially parents and career. The list above is the one most contemporary Western software assumes.

Whole sign and Placidus can disagree about the house even when they agree about the sign. Whole-sign houses give the entire rising sign to the 1st house and each following sign to the next house, so every house is exactly 30 degrees and a planet at 28 degrees of the rising sign is still in the 1st. Placidus divides the time it takes a degree to move from the horizon to the midheaven, so house cusps fall at uneven places and can cut through the middle of a sign. At that point a planet late in the rising sign may already sit in the 2nd house, and at high latitudes a sign can be intercepted, swallowed inside a house that has no cusp of its own. Placidus became the default in twentieth-century software. Whole sign is the older Western practice, and many traditional astrologers have returned to it. Neither system is "the" chart. A program should say which one it used. Parashari Kundli on this site takes each sidereal rashi as one bhava from the Lagna, which resembles whole sign and is still a different wheel, because the signs themselves begin about 24 degrees away.

A worked placement

Suppose the tropical ascendant is 12 degrees Virgo, and Mars is at 4 degrees Libra. In whole sign, Libra is the 2nd house, so Mars is a 2nd-house planet. In Placidus the 2nd-house cusp might fall at 8 degrees Libra, in which case Mars at 4 degrees Libra is still in the 1st house. Same birth, same Mars, two honest Western readings, two houses. State the system before you argue about the house. The ascendant that starts the count is explained in rising sign and sun sign, and a full reading order is in how to read a Western birth chart.

Questions people ask

Which house system should a beginner use?

Pick one and keep it for the whole reading. Whole sign is easier to see. Placidus is what many printed Western charts still use. Switching systems mid-paragraph makes a planet appear to jump houses.

Are Western houses the same as Vedic bhavas?

The topics overlap, and both counts begin at the eastern horizon. The zodiac, the house division, and the way a planet aspects a house are not the same. A tropical 7th house is not automatically the sidereal 7th bhava.

Can I read houses without a birth time?

No. Houses are counted from the ascendant, and the ascendant needs the time and the place. A sun-sign column has no houses in it.
