How AstroVedica Works: Our Astrology Method
AstroVedica separates two jobs. A calculation engine works out your chart from astronomical data. An AI then explains that result in plain language and never does the maths itself. Our chart is sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa), so your Vedic sign can differ from the Western one you know. Birth time matters most for the rising sign. The AI will not give medical, legal or financial certainty, and real astrologers are available to book.
Our astrology method: the engine calculates, the AI explains
1. You give birth details
Date, exact time and place of birth. The place becomes latitude, longitude and a time zone.
2. The engine calculates
It works out where every planet was in the sky, your rising sign, houses, life chapters (dashas) and compatibility scores. This is maths from astronomical data. No AI is involved.
3. The AI reads the result
Vedica is given your chart, your current period and the date, plus the classical rules that apply to your question. It writes the answer from that evidence only.
4. You see a plain answer
A direct answer first, the reason in everyday words, and timing only from today onward. If something is missing, it says so rather than guessing.
Chart positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, a widely used astronomical dataset. Because the AI only receives the engine's output, it cannot move a planet, invent a period or change a date. The voicecall with Vedica, our AI voice astrologer, uses the same engine data as the chat. You get 2 free questions on the website, and our Android app adds 2 more plus 1 free minute talking with Vedica.
Sidereal vs tropical, in plain words
Two zodiacs are in use. Tropical (Western) starts the zodiac at the spring equinox, so it follows the seasons. Sidereal(Vedic) starts it from the fixed stars. Two thousand years ago they matched. The Earth's axis has slowly wobbled since, and the gap today is about 24 degrees. That gap is called the ayanamsa.
In practice, if your Sun is early in a sign in the Western chart, your Vedic Sun is usually in the sign before it. Born on 5 April? Western says Aries; Vedic usually says Pisces. Neither is a mistake. They measure from different starting points.
We use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India. Our engine can take other ayanamsa settings, but Lahiri is the default for every chart on this site.
What we calculate
- Planet positions
- Vedic: Graha sthiti. Where the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the lunar nodes (Rahu, Ketu) were.
- Rising sign
- Vedic: Lagna. The sign on the eastern horizon at birth. It sets your twelve houses.
- Houses
- Vedic: Bhava. We use whole-sign houses: each house is one full sign, counted from the rising sign.
- Moon sign and lunar mansion
- Vedic: Rashi and Nakshatra. The Moon's sign and its 1 of 27 star-group.
- Life chapters
- Vedic: Vimshottari Dasha (Mahadasha, Antardasha). A fixed 120-year cycle of planet periods, started from your Moon's position.
- Divisional charts
- Vedic: Varga, such as the D9 Navamsha. Sixteen finer slices of each sign, used for marriage, strength and other detail.
- Compatibility
- Western: synastry. Vedic: Ashtakoot (Gun Milan), a 36-point match across eight factors.
- Western natal chart and synastry
- The same engine also exposes tropical Western natal and synastry calculations.
Accuracy and birth time
Planet positions depend on the date and time. The tool is exact; your input is the weak point.
- Rising sign and houses change roughly every two hours, so a time that is off by an hour or more can move your whole house layout.
- Moon sign changes about every two and a half days. It only moves if you were born close to the changeover.
- Life chapters (dashas)start from the Moon's position, so a time error can shift when a chapter begins by months.
- Divisional charts such as D9 are the most sensitive. A few minutes can change them.
If you do not know your birth time, check the birth certificate or ask a parent. Treat any answer that depends on the rising sign with caution, or talk to an astrologer about rectifying the time.
What the AI is allowed to say
- Facts about your chart come only from the engine's output. It must not invent a placement, a period or a date.
- If data is missing, it says which piece is missing instead of guessing.
- Timing is future-only: windows start no earlier than the current month.
- On medical, legal, financial and mental-health questions it gives the astrological view only and points to a qualified professional.
- If you sincerely ask, it says plainly that it is an AI astrologer, not a human.
- Astrology is guidance, not certainty. See the disclaimer.

FAQ
Common questions
Why is my Vedic sun sign different from my Western sun sign?
Western astrology fixes the zodiac to the seasons (tropical). Vedic astrology fixes it to the stars (sidereal). The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so many people's Vedic sign is one sign back from the one they know.
Does the AI calculate my chart?
No. The engine calculates positions, periods and compatibility. The AI is given those results and puts them into everyday language.
How much does a wrong birth time matter?
A lot for the rising sign (Lagna) and houses, which can change about every two hours. A few minutes' error usually changes little, but it can shift the finer divisional charts and period boundaries. The Moon sign rarely changes unless you were born near the day's sign change.
Can Vedica give medical, legal or financial advice?
No. On those topics Vedica gives only the astrological view and points you to a qualified professional. Astrology is guidance, not certainty.
What is free?
You get 2 free questions on the website, and 2 more plus 1 free minute talking with Vedica, our AI voice astrologer, when you get our Android app. Every free answer comes from the same engine as the paid ones.
Can I talk to a real astrologer?
Yes. You can book a human astrologer from the booking page, listed with their own profile.
Is my birth data private?
Your birth details are stored with your account so your chart and chat history carry across devices. We do not sell personal data. Read the privacy policy for what is shared with service providers and how long data is kept.
