Holi Astrology: Phalguna Purnima, Moon in Leo or Virgo and the Planetary Logic of Holika Dahan Bhadra Timing
Understand Holi astrology: Phalguna Purnima, the Moon in Leo or Virgo, and why Bhadra decides Holika Dahan timing. Read the Vedic logic before you light.
By Astro VedicaPublished
Every year, a few days before the festival, my inbox fills with the same message. Someone's family priest has said Holika Dahan is at 8:50 pm. A WhatsApp forward says 11:30 pm. A mobile app says "after Bhadra." The family is split, and the grandmother is the only one who won't budge. She's right more often than the apps are.
That confusion is why Holi astrology needs a proper technical treatment. Holi isn't a random date on a calendar. It rests on a specific celestial configuration: Phalguna Purnima, a full Moon opposite the Sun, with the Moon moving through Simha (Leo) or Kanya (Virgo) in the Phalguni and Hasta nakshatras. The one fixed rule is to light the Holika fire during Pradosha, in the evening, when the Purnima tithi is present and Bhadra (Vishti Karana) is not. This article explains the planetary logic behind that rule, so you can read any panchang with confidence.
Quick Insight
- Holika Dahan is performed on Phalguna Purnima, ideally in Pradosha (the first two-plus hours after sunset), and only when Bhadra (Vishti Karana) is not active.
- Why Bhadra keeps showing up: the first half of every Purnima tithi is always the Vishti Karana. This is mathematical, not coincidence, so the clash with Pradosha happens year after year.
- Moon in Leo or Virgo: the Moon at Phalguna Purnima sits in Simha (Purva Phalguni / Uttara Phalguni) or Kanya (Uttara Phalguni / Hasta). In the Bhadra-residence scheme, Moon in Leo places Bhadra on Earth (strictest avoidance). Moon in Virgo places it in Patala (traditionally considered milder).
- If Bhadra overlaps Pradosha: wait for it to end. If it runs past midnight, many Nirnaya traditions allow Holika Dahan in Bhadra Puchha (the tail end), never in Bhadra Mukha (the face).
- Personal chart effect: the Holi Moon activates your Chandra, Venus-ruled Purva Phalguni themes, and your 5th, 7th and 12th houses. The remedies below work with that.
Classical Foundation: What the Texts Actually Say About Phalguna Purnima and Holika Dahan
First, a correction that saves a lot of arguing. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra doesn't prescribe a Holika Dahan procedure. BPHS is a natal and predictive text. The festival rules come from the Puranic and Nibandha (digest) literature: the Bhavishya Purana, Narada Purana, and later compendia like Nirnaya Sindhu and Dharma Sindhu. The timing logic, though, comes from the muhurta tradition (Muhurta Chintamani, Brihat Samhita), which is built on the same Jyotish mathematics BPHS teaches.
Three principles run through those sources:
- Tithi: Purnima must be present. The fire belongs to Phalguna Shukla Purnima, when the Moon is full, at 180° from the Sun.
- Kala: Pradosha-vyapini. The Purnima must cover Pradosha, the early evening window after sunset. Fire rites for Holika are an evening rite, not a morning one.
- Bhadra-rahita. The Vishti Karana must be absent from the lighting time. The Nibandha authors say plainly that burning in Bhadra brings disturbance to the performer and the community (nagara-kshobha, unrest in the town, is the phrase you'll see in several digests).
Why Pradosha? The Puranic story of Prahlada and Holika is the narrative layer, but the Jyotish logic is simpler. The Sun has just set, the Moon is rising full in the east, and fire is lit at the exact junction where the two luminaries stand opposite each other on the horizon. That is a sandhi, a threshold, and ritual fire at a threshold has always been a way to burn what we want to shed.
The Mathematics of Bhadra (and Why It Always Clashes)
This is the part most blogs skip. A karana is half a tithi, so there are two per tithi and 60 per lunar month. Seven chara (movable) karanas (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti) repeat eight times through the month. Four sthira (fixed) karanas close and open the cycle: Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga and Kimstughna.
Run the count and you'll find that the first half of Shukla Purnima always lands on Vishti, the seventh in the repeating series. The second half is Bava. So every Phalguna Purnima begins with Bhadra, and the tithi itself runs roughly 19 to 26 hours, which makes Bhadra last about 10 to 13 hours. Whether it spills into Pradosha depends entirely on when the tithi starts. If Purnima begins in the afternoon, Bhadra is still alive at sunset. If it began in the morning, Bhadra may have already cleared.
That's why the date and time keep shifting across years, and why a lazy "Holi is always at 8 pm" rule fails.
Deep Vedic Analysis: Moon in Leo or Virgo on Phalguna Purnima
Why the Moon Lands in Leo or Virgo
Phalguna Purnima occurs when the Sun is in sidereal Kumbha (Aquarius) or just entering Meena (Pisces). The full Moon sits 180° opposite: in Simha when the Sun is in Kumbha, in Kanya when the Sun has moved into Meena. The month takes its name from the Phalguni nakshatras, Purva Phalguni (Leo 13°20' to 26°40') and Uttara Phalguni (Leo 26°40' to Virgo 10°00'). Hasta (Virgo 10°00' to 23°20') often catches the full Moon in later Purnimas.
Planetary Nature: What the Moon Is Doing
The Moon is exalted in Vrishabha (Taurus, peaking at 3°) and debilitated in Vrischika (Scorpio, 3°). At Holi it's in neither. In Simha it occupies the sign of its friend, the Sun. In Kanya it occupies Mercury's sign. Mercury is a friend of the Moon, though the Moon is an enemy of Mercury, a lopsided relationship that shows up as emotional over-analysis in Virgo Moons. Neither placement is a dignity in the formal sense, but a full Moon in Shukla Paksha carries paksha bala (lunar-phase strength), and it's near its strongest on this date.
Moon in Leo (Simha): The emotional field is warm, proud, expressive, and wants an audience. Leo is a fire sign and a sthira (fixed) one. Holika's bonfire in a Leo-Moon year feels almost literal: the Moon's moods are drawn into the fire element. It's a performance-heavy, community-heavy Purnima, with large gatherings, loud ritual, and strong emotional temperature.
Moon in Virgo (Kanya): The tone shifts toward cleansing, correction and service. Virgo is an earth sign and a dual one. People often describe a quieter, more purificatory feel to the fire. I'd call this the "audit year" for relationships: grievances you've stored come up for review.
Bhadra's Residence: The Detail That Changes Everything
Muhurta texts assign Bhadra a nivasa (residence) by the Moon's sign during the Vishti Karana:
- Moon in Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Vrischika: Bhadra resides in Swarga (heaven).
- Moon in Kanya, Dhanu, Tula, Makara: Bhadra resides in Patala (netherworld).
- Moon in Kumbha, Meena, Karka, Simha: Bhadra resides in Bhu-loka / Martya (Earth).
The traditional reading is that Bhadra is effective, meaning harmful to earthly undertakings, only when it resides on Earth. Swarga and Patala residences are considered to reduce or nullify its effect on terrestrial rites.
Apply that to Holi. Moon in Simha: Bhadra is in Bhu-loka. Strict avoidance. Moon in Kanya: Bhadra is in Patala. Traditionally milder. This is the technical heart of the "Moon in Leo or Virgo" question.
Here is my stance, and I'll defend it. Even for Patala Bhadra, I would not light the fire in Bhadra Mukha if I can wait. Some priests lean on the nivasa rule to justify convenience, and convenience is not a Jyotish argument. The Nirnaya Sindhu line is conservative: avoid Bhadra for Holika, and use Puchha only as a fallback.
Why Is It Called Bhadra? The Saturn Link
In the Puranic account, Bhadra is the daughter of Surya and Chhaya and a sister of Shani. That puts her in a Sun-Saturn lineage, and it's no accident that Holi falls when the Sun is in Kumbha, Saturn's own sign. The Karana carries a Saturnine flavor: obstruction, hard edges, delay, a force that interrupts auspicious beginnings (shubha-karya). Auspicious ignition and Saturnine friction don't belong together.
The Nakshatra Layer
Purva Phalguni (Leo 13°20' to 26°40') is ruled by Venus, deity Bhaga (god of delight and fortune), symbol the front legs of a bed or a hammock. It's the nakshatra of pleasure, marital joy, rest after labor, and also of indulgence and sensory excess. Holi's color, music and revelry map neatly here.
Uttara Phalguni (Leo 26°40' to Virgo 10°00') is ruled by the Sun, deity Aryaman (contracts, hospitality, patronage), symbol the back legs of a bed. This is the nakshatra of keeping promises and honoring alliances. A Holi that starts under this Moon is perfect for reconciliations.
Hasta (Virgo 10°00' to 23°20') is ruled by the Moon itself, deity Savitar, symbol the open hand. Craft, skill, healing touch. A Holi Moon in Hasta makes the Moon strong in its own nakshatra even though the sign isn't its own.
Drishti and Bhava
The full Moon aspects (7th drishti) the Sun's position in Kumbha or Meena. In your birth chart, whichever houses Leo/Kumbha or Virgo/Meena occupy become the field Holi's energy lights up. If your Lagna is Simha, the Moon is in your Lagna and Kumbha is the 7th. That's a "relationship and self" Holi. For Karka Lagna, Leo is the 2nd (family, speech, wealth). For Mesha Lagna, Leo is the 5th (children, creativity, intelligence).
Dasha and Transit Timing: When Holi's Chandra Activates in Your Chart
Holi doesn't act on everyone equally. It acts in proportion to Moon's dasha relationship with you. The Vimshottari order runs Ketu (7 years), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17), 120 years in total.
- Moon Mahadasha or Antardasha: the Holi Moon is directly resonant. Emotional events, domestic shifts, mother-related matters tend to surface during this fortnight.
- Venus dasha with natal Moon in Purva Phalguni: if you were born with your Moon here, your birth dasha was Venus, and Holi's lunar emphasis amplifies pleasure, romance and money themes in later Venus periods.
- Sun dasha with Moon in Uttara Phalguni: promises, contracts and public standing come into focus.
- Saturn periods (including Sade Sati): Bhadra's Saturnine link makes you more sensitive to timing errors. Get the muhurta right.
- Rahu/Ketu periods: the fire ritual's burning symbolism tends to feel personally intense, with old patterns surfacing for release.
For transit, check where the Sun sits relative to your natal Moon (Kumbha/Meena) and where Saturn stands. Sun in Kumbha means Saturn's house is hosting the Sun, so Saturn-lordship themes (work, obligations) are loud. When the Holi Moon in Leo or Virgo transits over a natal planet or your own Moon degree, that's a trigger day. Mark the degree in your chart; don't just read the Rashi.
Real-Life Manifestations
These are patterns we've seen across consultations at Astro Vedica. The case details below are composites with identifying information changed.
Career
A software lead in Pune, Simha Lagna, was in Saturn-Moon dasha when Holi Moon crossed his Lagna. He quit in a flash of pride after a public disagreement, a classic Leo Moon response. The Moon was in Magha, ruled by Ketu, with Mars in the 10th. We advised a 21-day pause before any resignation letter. He stayed, got promoted six months later. Leo Moon seasons reward the person who delays the ego-driven move.
Marriage and Relationships
Purva Phalguni is the classic marriage nakshatra in popular lore, but the real story is subtler. A client from Jaipur with natal Venus conjunct Moon in Purva Phalguni kept getting involved in short, intense relationships around Holi. Her 7th lord was in the 12th. The Holi Moon touching natal Venus gave her a yearly "spark" that wasn't a long-term signal. The fix wasn't a gemstone. It was waiting 90 days before committing to anyone met during the festival.
Finance
Moon in the 2nd or 11th from your Lagna during Holi tends to produce impulse spending: gifts, festivities, large social expenditure. Venus-ruled Purva Phalguni supports luxury leanings. If the 2nd lord is weak, set a hard budget.
Health
Moon rules fluids, mind and digestion. Holi falls at the seasonal junction when Kapha accumulation turns into spring aggravation. Heavy sweets, bhang and cold-water play are classic triggers for Moon-afflicted charts (Moon with Rahu, Saturn, or in the 6th/8th/12th). For Leo Moons, heart rate and blood pressure; for Virgo Moons, gut and nervous system.
Spirituality
The purest use of this Purnima is tyaga, renunciation. Burning what you're ready to let go of is a real practice, not a metaphor. In my experience, people who write down a single habit or grudge, sincerely offer it into the fire, and then actually change one daily behavior see a measurable difference over the next Moon cycle.
Exceptions and Cancellations: What Neutralizes Bhadra
This is where a good Jyotishi earns their keep. The standard exceptions, as found in the Nirnaya tradition:
- Bhadra ends before Pradosha. Cleanest case. Light during Pradosha.
- Bhadra covers Pradosha but ends before midnight. Wait for Bhadra to end, then light the fire within the night.
- Bhadra continues past midnight. Many authorities permit Bhadra Puchha (the tail, the closing segment of roughly an hour or slightly more). Bhadra Mukha (the face) is never used.
- Purnima doesn't cover Pradosha on day one. Take the day when Purnima is present at Pradosha. If it's present on both days, follow your regional panchang, since the traditions differ.
- Patala or Swarga residence (Moon in Virgo, Aries, Taurus, etc.): some authorities treat Bhadra as non-malefic for earthly acts. I treat this as a secondary mitigation, not a license.
If Purnima is not found at Pradosha at all, or Bhadra occupies the entire night, the texts allow the next-best auspicious window rather than abandoning the rite. Consult a local pandit, because regional practice varies from Maharashtra to Mathura.
One more factor: when a Chandra Grahan (lunar eclipse) coincides with Phalguna Purnima, sutak rules apply where the eclipse is visible, and the Holika timing shifts accordingly. Treat that year as a special case and check a reliable panchang.
Comparative Analysis: Holi vs Similar Occasions and Placements
Holika Dahan vs Raksha Bandhan
Both avoid Bhadra for the same reason. Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravana Purnima, and the same first-half-Vishti rule applies. Rakhi tying is also pushed out of Bhadra. The logic is identical: Purnima always starts with Vishti.
Holika Dahan vs Diwali
Diwali's Lakshmi Puja is performed in Pradosha on Amavasya, a new Moon. Holika is performed in Pradosha on Purnima, a full Moon. One invites; the other burns. The Moon is dark in one, full in the other, and both are bounded by Sun-Moon opposition or conjunction.
Moon in Leo vs Moon in Virgo at Holi
| Factor | Moon in Leo | Moon in Virgo |
|---|---|---|
| Bhadra residence | Bhu-loka (Earth): strictest | Patala: traditionally milder |
| Sun at the time | Kumbha (Saturn's sign) | Meena (Jupiter's sign) |
| Nakshatras | Purva / Uttara Phalguni | Uttara Phalguni / Hasta |
| Emotional tone | Expressive, proud, festive | Analytical, purificatory |
Phalguna Purnima vs Sharad Purnima
Sharad Purnima (Moon in Revati/Ashwini region, Aries-Pisces) is the nectar Moon, associated with healing and cultivation. Phalguna Purnima is the fire Moon, associated with cleansing and release. Same phase, opposite function.
Remedies: A Layered Approach
1. Mantra
Chandra Beeja Mantra
Sanskrit: ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्रमसे नमः
IAST: Oṁ Śrāṁ Śrīṁ Śrauṁ Saḥ Candramase Namaḥ
Meaning: salutations to the Moon, invoked through the seed syllables of calm, prosperity and subtle strength.
Count: 108 times on Holi evening after the fire is lit or before sleep; 11,000 over 40 days for serious Moon afflictions (traditionally done by a priest on the native's behalf).
Holika Prayer (traditional)
Sanskrit: असृक्पाभयसंत्रस्तैः कृता त्वं होलि बालिशैः। अतस्त्वां पूजयिष्यामि भूते भूतिप्रदा भव॥
IAST: Asṛkpābhayasantrastaiḥ kṛtā tvaṁ holi bāliśaiḥ | Atastvāṁ pūjayiṣyāmi bhūte bhūtipradā bhava ||
Meaning: roughly, "O Holika, you were made by fearful, simple-minded people; therefore I worship you. Grant prosperity and well-being."
Count: once during pooja, after Sankalpa.
Surya Mantra (for Leo Moons or Sun-ruled Uttara Phalguni)
Sanskrit: ॐ घृणिः सूर्याय नमः
IAST: Oṁ Ghṛṇiḥ Sūryāya Namaḥ
Meaning: salutations to the radiant Sun.
Count: 108 times at sunrise the following morning.
2. Daan (Donation)
- White rice, milk, sugar or curd, donated on the Monday following Holi.
- Seasonal grain and sesame to the needy, which also appeases Saturn's Kumbha-Sun energy.
- Wood or dried cow-dung cakes (upla) contributed to the community Holika, not wet or synthetic fuel.
3. Gemstone (With Caution)
Pearl (moti) is the Moon's stone and Diamond or White Sapphire the Venus option. Holi is not a magical day to buy either. Wear a Pearl only if the Moon is a functional benefic in your chart and is not Lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th. Avoid it if Moon is conjunct Rahu/Ketu without remedial support, or if your Lagna is Vrischika and the Moon is debilitated or afflicted, unless a chart review specifically supports it. Typical practice is silver, ring finger or little finger, set on a Monday during Shukla Paksha. Many people do better with mantra and daan than with a stone. I don't recommend a gem for a festival-based reason.
4. Behavioral Correction
- Don't light the fire early to "beat the crowd." Wait for the muhurta.
- Choose one specific habit or grudge to let go of. Write it down, offer it.
- Moderate bhang and sugar, especially with a Moon-affected chart.
- Apologize to one person before Holi day, not after.
- Don't burn plastic, tires or treated wood. Ritual purity and ecological sense agree here.
5. Yantra
A Chandra Yantra in silver or copper, energized with the Beeja Mantra on a Monday, placed in the northwest (the Moon's direction, Vayavya) of the home or puja room. For prosperity-focused charts, a Sri Yantra under guidance is traditional. Don't buy a pre-packaged "Holi Yantra" from a random stall. Authenticity matters more than packaging.
Common Myths and Misconceptions
"Any time on Purnima is fine."
No. The texts require Pradosha coverage and absence of Bhadra. A pre-dawn or noon fire is not Holika Dahan by the Nibandha definition.
"Bhadra means the whole day is cursed."
No. Bhadra is a karana, a half-tithi, and it's only a problem for the specific act of starting auspicious fire rites. Meals, prayer and ordinary life carry on.
"Moon in Leo on Holi means a bad year."
No. Moon in Leo only changes Bhadra's residence to the Earth plane. It says nothing about your year. Annual predictions come from Varshaphal and dashas, not from one Purnima.
"If Bhadra Puchha is allowed, Mukha must be too."
No. Mukha (face) is the active, harmful segment. Puchha (tail) is the tolerated one.
"Holika ash cures everything."
The ash is traditionally applied as vibhuti-style blessing on the forehead. It is not a substitute for medicine, and it is not a remedy for a Mahadasha issue.
Practical Action Plan for This Week
- Get your local panchang timings. Note when Purnima starts and ends, when Bhadra starts and ends, and where Pradosha falls for your city. Don't borrow another city's timing.
- Identify the Moon sign and nakshatra at Holi. This tells you the Bhadra residence and the nakshatra tone.
- Mark the house in your chart where Leo or Virgo falls. That's your focus area.
- Choose your one thing to burn. One. Not a list.
- Arrange simple pooja items: cow-dung cakes, dry wood, raw cotton thread, water, roli, rice, jaggery, coconut.
- Take Sankalpa and chant the mantra only at the correct muhurta.
- Afterward, do your Monday donation and start a 40-day Chandra mantra routine if your chart supports it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct Holika Dahan time according to Vedic astrology?
Holika Dahan should be performed on Phalguna Purnima during Pradosha, the early evening after sunset, when the Purnima tithi is present and Bhadra (Vishti Karana) is not active. If Bhadra overlaps Pradosha, wait for it to end, or use Bhadra Puchha as a fallback per Nirnaya Sindhu-based practice.
Why is Bhadra avoided during Holika Dahan?
Bhadra is the Vishti Karana, associated with Saturnine obstruction in the Puranic tradition (Bhadra is Shani's sister). Muhurta texts treat it as unsuitable for auspicious fire rites and new beginnings.
Why does Bhadra fall on Purnima every year?
Because the karana cycle is fixed. The first half of Shukla Purnima is always Vishti, and the second half is Bava. Whether it clashes with Pradosha depends on when the tithi begins.
What does it mean when the Moon is in Leo or Virgo during Holi?
Phalguna Purnima places the Moon in Leo or Virgo. In the Bhadra residence scheme, Moon in Leo puts Bhadra on Earth (strict avoidance), while Moon in Virgo puts it in Patala (traditionally milder).
Which nakshatra is associated with Phalguna Purnima?
Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni, the nakshatras that give the month its name, with Hasta sometimes involved in later Purnimas.
Can I perform Holika Dahan in Bhadra Puchha?
Many traditions allow it when Bhadra extends beyond midnight and no other window exists. Bhadra Mukha should be avoided. Consult your local priest, since regional customs vary.
Should I wear a Pearl on Holi?
Only if your chart supports it. Holi is not a reason to buy a gemstone. The Moon must be a functional benefic and free of serious afflictions.
Closing Counsel: What Holi Astrology Actually Asks of You
If you take one thing from this Holi astrology guide, take this: the festival's technical rules aren't superstition. They come from a coherent system that links tithi, karana, Moon's sign, and ritual intent. Pradosha with Purnima and without Bhadra is the standard. Moon in Leo asks for stricter discipline, and Moon in Virgo allows a little more flexibility but still rewards the careful.
Don't let an app or a forwarded message decide this for you. Check the panchang, understand why the timing works, and then do the rite properly and quietly. Burn one real thing. Apologize to one real person. Then look at your own chart's Moon, because that's where Holi's energy lands for you.
If your chart shows a loaded Moon (Rahu, Saturn, or dusthana placement) and you want a personal reading before Phalguna Purnima, the Astro Vedica team reviews charts for exactly this sort of timing and remedy question.
Prepared by the Astro Vedica editorial desk. Muhurta timings vary by location and regional panchang; always verify with a local authority before performing the rite.
FAQs
What is the astrological significance of Holi?
Holi falls on Phalguna Purnima, when the Moon is full and directly opposite the Sun, a peak of lunar energy that Jyotish treats as ideal for releasing accumulated negativity. The Moon at this time transits Simha (Leo) or Kanya (Virgo), usually through Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni or Hasta nakshatra. Holika Dahan on the eve marks the burning of ego and impurity, and Rangwali Holi the next day celebrates renewal.
Why is Holika Dahan not performed during Bhadra?
Bhadra is the Vishti Karana, the 7th karana, and is considered inauspicious for new beginnings and sacred fire rites. Classical Muhurta texts prohibit lighting the Holika fire during Bhadra because it is said to invite obstacles and harm. The preferred window is Pradosha Kala after sunset, when Purnima is present and Bhadra has ended.
What is the correct time for Holika Dahan?
Holika Dahan should be done in Pradosha Kala, the period after sunset, while Phalguna Purnima tithi prevails and Bhadra is not active. If Bhadra extends through Pradosha, the fire is lit after Bhadra Punchha or after Bhadra ends, and sometimes in the Bhadra Mukha-free portion. Because tithi and karana timings vary by city and sunset time, use a Panchang calculated for your own location.
What is Bhadra Punchha and can Holika Dahan be done in it?
Bhadra Punchha is the tail portion of Bhadra, the last part of the Vishti Karana, and is considered the least harmful segment. Many Panchang traditions allow Holika Dahan in this window if Bhadra covers the entire Pradosha period. Bhadra Mukha, the face portion, must always be avoided.
Which nakshatras and signs are associated with Holi?
Holi is linked to the Moon in Simha (Leo), ruled by the Sun, or Kanya (Virgo), ruled by Mercury. The nakshatras involved are Purva Phalguni (ruled by Venus), Uttara Phalguni (ruled by the Sun) and Hasta (ruled by the Moon). This explains the festival's themes of joy, creativity, social bonding and emotional release.
How do planetary periods (dasha) affect the results of Holi rituals?
Those running Moon, Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha or Antardasha, or those with Sade Sati, often feel the emotional intensity of Phalguna Purnima more strongly. Rituals done with sincerity during these periods can ease mental restlessness, fear and karmic burdens. Individuals with a weak or afflicted Moon in their birth chart are generally advised to take part in the Holika fire ritual with extra care.
What remedies can be done on Holika Dahan night?
Common remedies include offering coconut, grains, or sesame seeds into the Holika fire, circumambulating it three or seven times, and chanting Narasimha or Vishnu mantras. To reduce Rahu-Ketu or Saturn afflictions, people also offer black sesame or mustard seeds and donate to the needy the next day. Keep all offerings sattvic, and perform them only after the fire is lit at the proper muhurta.
Can Holi dates differ between panchangs, and which should I follow?
Yes. Differences arise because Purnima tithi begins and ends at different times across locations and because Bhadra can overlap Pradosha differently in each city. Follow a Drik Panchang calculated for your place of residence, or the guidance of your family priest. When in doubt, the rule is to light the fire in Pradosha during Purnima and outside Bhadra Mukha.
