Mercury Retrograde and Budha Vakri
Mercury retrograde is one apparent motion. Western columns and Budha vakri in Jyotish read that motion with different rules.

Mercury retrograde and Budha vakri are one astronomical event read in two traditions. Mercury appears to move backward against the stars for about three weeks, three or four times a year, because the Earth is overtaking it on an inside orbit. Western popular writing and Jyotish do not draw the same conclusion from that loop.
In English-language media the three weeks became a public warning: delay the contract, expect the email to go astray, do not buy the laptop. That warning is louder than the older Western literature, which treated a retrograde Mercury as a planet moving against its usual direction and then asked for the sign, the house, and the aspects in the birth chart. A person with natal Mercury retrograde is not living in a permanent outage. A transit of retrograde Mercury across an empty part of the chart can be a quiet three weeks. The slogan treats every chart as if it were the same chart.
In Jyotish the planet is Budha, and vakri means retrograde. A retrograde Budha is judged by the sign it occupies, the house it occupies from the Lagna, the planets that join it, and whether its dasha is running. Retrograde motion is not an automatic harm. Budha in a sign it rules, during a dasha that has little to do with speech or trade, is a different season from Budha crossing the natal Moon while the Budha period is open. The astronomy can be identical on the clock and still matter to one person more than to another.
The station is also a naming problem. On 24 October 2026, around 12:41 p.m. IST, Mercury stations retrograde. On this site's Lahiri chart that station falls in sidereal Libra, Tula. A Western column names the sign from the tropical zodiac. Add the ayanamsa of about 24 degrees and the tropical sign name can be Libra or the next sign, depending on the exact degree. Both notes can be right about the station and still print different sign names. Paste a tropical headline onto a sidereal chart only after you have checked the longitude.
A practical split
Use the Western phrase when you are talking about a tropical transit and a cultural habit of double-checking messages. Use Budha vakri when you are inside a Kundli. Reread the document either way. The sky does not require you to stop ordinary work. The difference between a transit and a gochar is in Western transits and gochar, and the 24-degree naming gap is in why the sun sign and the Vedic rashi differ.
Questions people ask
Should I sign nothing until Mercury turns direct?
Read twice, and keep a copy, especially for a document you cannot undo. Ordinary work does not pause for three weeks because a planet is retrograde. A Jyotish reading still asks whether Budha is active in that birth chart.
I was born with Mercury retrograde. What does that mean?
In Western charts it is one condition of natal Mercury, read with the sign and house. In Jyotish a vakri Budha is also one condition, read with dignity and dasha. It is not a life of broken phones.
Are the retrograde dates the same in both systems?
The station in time is the same astronomical moment. The sign name can differ, because one zodiac is tropical and the other, here, is Lahiri sidereal.
