October 2026 Transits: The Dates That Matter
Venus and Mercury turn retrograde, Saturn re-enters Uttara Bhadrapada on 9 October, and Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October. Dates in IST.
By Avinash ChandanPublished
Four dates do the real work in October 2026. Venus turned retrograde in Libra on 3 October. Saturn, still retrograde in Pisces, slips back into Uttara Bhadrapada on the evening of 9 October. Mercury turns retrograde in Libra on 24 October. Jupiter leaves exalted Cancer and enters Leo on 31 October, around 12:50 p.m. IST. Everything else this month is a tithi, a festival, or a faster planet passing through.
These notes are Parashari Jyotish. Rashis are Lahiri sidereal, gochar is counted from the natal Moon, and Rahu is the mean node used in classical Jyotish. Times are Indian Standard Time. A panchang that takes the tithi at sunrise can move a festival by a day. If a muhurat sits on that boundary, use the sunrise tithi for your city.
Where the slow planets actually are
Through the month, Saturn is in Pisces, retrograde since 27 July 2026. It has been in Pisces since 29 March 2025. It does not change signs in October. Rahu is in Aquarius and Ketu is in Leo, and they do not change signs in October either. The nodal shift into Capricorn and Cancer comes around 5–6 December. Jupiter spends the month exalted in Cancer and crosses into Leo on the last day, into Magha, where Ketu is already sitting.
Mangal is in Karka for the middle of the month, and Karka is Mangal’s neecha. Guru in the same sign is uchcha. An exalted teacher and a debilitated fighter sharing a rashi is a mixed picture: judgement is available, and so is irritability at home. The conjunction ends for Guru on 31 October, when Guru leaves Karka. Check a daily panchang for the day Mangal itself leaves Karka. That exit is a faster event, and the minute is not worth freezing into a headline.
There is no solar eclipse and no lunar eclipse in October 2026. Anyone selling an eclipse remedy for this month is selling a date that is not on the calendar.
The month, in order
On 4 October, Surya in Kanya and vakri Shani in Meena were seven signs apart, so each received the other’s 7th aspect. Shani also casts its 3rd and 10th drishti, but that day the meeting with the Sun was the saptama drishti: authority on one side, delay on the other. The aspect has passed. What remains is whatever decision you postponed that week.
Shukra has been vakri in Tula since 3 October and stays that way until about 13 November. Tula is Shukra’s own sign, so this is a review inside Shukra’s own topics: agreements, marriage talks, jewellery, vehicles, and the money spent to feel settled. The longer note is Shukra vakri in Tula from 3 October.
On 9 October, around 7:30 p.m. IST, retrograde Saturn leaves Revati and re-enters Uttara Bhadrapada, a nakshatra Saturn itself rules. It stations direct on 11 December still inside that nakshatra, and only walks forward into Revati again around 8 February 2027. Who is in Sade Sati while this is happening is spelled out in Saturn’s return to Uttara Bhadrapada.
Sarva Pitru Amavasya falls around 10 October. The exact new moon is late on the 10th, near 9:20 p.m. IST. Shraddha is observed by the tithi at sunrise, so some cities mark Mahalaya on the 10th and some diaspora lists print the 9th. Finish the shraddha your family actually keeps. Do not move it to suit a transit reel.
Sharad Navratri’s Ghatasthapana is listed for 11 October. The Sun enters Libra on 17 October, which is Tula Sankranti, and that Saturday also sits inside Navratri. Vijayadashami is 20 October in many North Indian listings and 21 October where the sunrise tithi or the regional calendar (Mysore, parts of the east) holds the festival a day later. Book the visarjan from your city’s panchang, not from a single national headline.
Mercury turns retrograde in Libra on 24 October, around 12:41 p.m. IST, and turns direct around 13 November, the same stretch in which Venus is still retrograde. The overlap is its own problem, and it has its own note: Venus and Mercury retrograde together.
The exact full moon falls on the morning of 26 October, about 9:41 a.m. IST. Sharad Purnima and Kojagari are widely observed on 25 October, because the purnima tithi is already running at sunrise that Sunday. Both dates are “right” for different jobs. The festival is the sunrise tithi. The astronomical full moon is Monday morning.
Karwa Chauth is Thursday 29 October in India. The fast breaks at moonrise, and moonrise is a city time, not a national one. In the US and Canada many families observe it on the 28th. Venus is still retrograde that night. A vrata is a vow you already know. It does not need to be cancelled because Shukra is vakri. If the only plan for that week is a large new purchase or a freshly signed joint account, that plan can wait until after 13 November. The fast cannot.
On 31 October Jupiter enters Leo. That is the hinge of the season, and it does not last in a straight line: Jupiter stations retrograde on 13 December and re-enters Cancer on 25 January 2027. Read the Leo ingress before you treat 31 October as a permanent change of weather.
What comes after October
Diwali falls in November this year. Dhanteras is 6 November and Lakshmi Puja is 8 November, still inside the Venus and Mercury retrograde. A Diwali purchase you can return is a different object from a booking you cannot. Prefer the first until both planets are direct.
Then the slow sky moves three times before spring. Rahu enters Capricorn around 5–6 December, with Ketu entering Cancer the same day. Saturn turns direct in Pisces on 11 December, around 5 a.m. IST. Jupiter turns retrograde in early Leo on 13 December, and on 25 January 2027 it backs into Cancer again, exalted, with Ketu now in that sign. Those four pieces are written separately so this page stays a calendar and not twelve horoscopes stacked on top of each other.
- Rahu enters Capricorn in December 2026
- Saturn turns direct on 11 December
- Jupiter turns retrograde on 13 December
- Jupiter returns to Cancer on 25 January 2027
How to use a transit calendar
Gochar describes the sky. Your chart decides whether that sky has a door into your life. A Jupiter ingress that falls in an empty house, during a Dasha that has nothing to do with Jupiter, can pass as a mood. The same ingress on the natal 7th lord, during that lord’s antardasha, is a year you will remember. Run a free Kundli and then a Vimshottari Dasha analysis before you rearrange a wedding or a job around one of these dates. If the date is already load-bearing, talk to a Vedic astrologer with the birth time in the room, not in a comment thread.

Questions people keep asking
Is there an eclipse in October 2026?
No. October 2026 has no solar eclipse and no lunar eclipse. The month is busy because of two retrogrades, Navratri, and Jupiter’s sign change.
Which planet changes sign in October 2026?
Among the slow planets, only Jupiter. It enters Leo on 31 October. Saturn stays in Pisces. Rahu stays in Aquarius until early December. The Sun enters Libra on 17 October, which matters for sankranti and for the month’s mood, and it is not a slow-planet transit.
Why do Dussehra dates disagree?
Vijayadashami is observed by the tithi prevailing at sunrise, and regional calendars do not all take that tithi on the same civil date. In 2026 that puts the festival on 20 October in many North Indian lists and on 21 October in others. Use the panchang for the city where the ritual happens.
Should I wait to sign anything until November?
Wait on the documents you cannot easily undo: a sale deed, a visa filing, a wedding vendor contract with a forfeiture clause. Ordinary work does not pause because Mercury is retrograde. From 24 October to about 13 November, read the paper twice and keep the receipt.
