Atmakaraka and Darakaraka

Atmakaraka calculator: your soul planet and partner planet

In Jaimini astrology the planet furthest into its sign is your Atmakaraka, the soul planet. The planet least far along is your Darakaraka, the partner planet. Find all seven for your chart.

The offset fills in when you pick a place (for example 5.5 for India, -5 for New York in winter). Check it if you were born during daylight saving time.

What is an Atmakaraka?

An Atmakaraka calculator finds the planet in your birth chart that Jaimini astrology calls the "soul planet". The word comes from Sanskrit: atma means soul or self, and karaka means significator. In this tradition, one planet in every chart is treated as the most important one, the clearest picture of what your life is really about, and it is picked by a simple rule rather than by opinion.

Jaimini astrology is a branch of Vedic (Indian) astrology named after the sage Jaimini. It does not give every planet a fixed job. Instead it ranks seven planets by how far each has travelled through its sign, and gives each rank a role. The first rank is the Atmakaraka. The last is the Darakaraka, covered below. Together the seven are called the Chara Karakas, or "moving significators", because the planet in each role changes from chart to chart.

The seven Chara Karakas

Each role has a plain meaning. The planet that fills it describes the style of that part of your life, so the same role can feel very different in two charts.

RankRoleMeaning in EnglishWhat it stands for
1AtmakarakaSoulYour deepest drive and central life lesson
2AmatyakarakaMinisterCareer, work and how you advise or serve others
3BhratrikarakaSiblingSiblings, courage, friends and allies
4MatrikarakaMotherMother, home and emotional security
5PutrakarakaChildChildren, creativity and learning
6GnatikarakaRelativeRivals, obstacles and extended family
7DarakarakaSpouseThe partner planet: what you look for in a spouse

Some teachers swap the fifth and sixth roles or name them slightly differently, so you may see another list in another book. The first and the last, which are the ones people look up most, are the same everywhere.

How the Atmakaraka calculator works

The method takes three steps. First, find the sidereal position of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Second, ignore which sign each one is in, and look only at how many degrees it has moved inside that sign, a number from 0 to 30. Third, rank the seven from the highest number to the lowest. The planet with the highest number is your Atmakaraka. The idea is that the planet furthest along has "seen the most" of its sign and so carries the most experience.

We use sidereal positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India, so the sign names may differ from your usual Western chart. Our sidereal vs tropical page explains why.

Seven karakas or eight?

Classical texts describe two schemes. The seven-karaka scheme uses only the Sun to Saturn. The eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, the Moon's north node, and ranks it with the others, which can shift every role down by one. Rahu is measured backwards, so its degree is counted from the end of the sign. Both schemes are old and both have followers. This calculator uses the seven-karaka scheme and leaves Rahu out, because it is the one most teachers begin with. If your own teacher uses eight, your answer may differ, and that is a real difference of method rather than an error in either.

What each planet means as your Atmakaraka

Read these as themes rather than predictions. They describe tendencies and lessons, and none of them is a sentence. The sign and house the planet sits in change the picture a great deal, which is why a full reading looks at more than the planet name.

Sun. A Sun Atmakaraka tends to carry a strong need for purpose, recognition and self-respect. The lesson is usually about leading without needing to be applauded, and about the relationship with authority, fathers and your own sense of worth.

Moon. A Moon Atmakaraka often points to a life run through feeling and care. People with it are described as sensitive and attuned to others, and the lesson tends to be about emotional steadiness, belonging and learning to nourish yourself as well as everyone else.

Mars. A Mars Atmakaraka is read as a life of action, courage and drive. The growth edge is channelling energy and competitiveness into something constructive, and learning when to protect and when to simply rest.

Mercury. A Mercury Atmakaraka is associated with curiosity, communication, learning and skill with words, numbers or trade. The lesson is often about turning cleverness into wisdom, and about not living only in the head.

Jupiter. A Jupiter Atmakaraka is linked with teaching, meaning, faith and generosity. People are often drawn to guide others, and the theme to watch is humility: holding beliefs firmly enough to live by them but loosely enough to keep learning.

Venus. A Venus Atmakaraka points to the pull of beauty, love, art and harmony. The lesson tends to be about valuing yourself without needing constant reassurance, and about balancing pleasure with commitment.

Saturn. A Saturn Atmakaraka is read as a life of duty, patience and slow building. The early years are often described as demanding, and the reward is resilience and earned authority. The lesson is to be disciplined without becoming hard on yourself.

Darakaraka: the partner planet and relationships

The Darakaraka is the planet with the lowest degree within its sign among the seven. Dara means spouse, so this planet is read for the qualities you are drawn to in a partner, and for how you tend to behave in a committed relationship. A Venus Darakaraka is often described as a partner who values beauty and harmony, a Saturn one as steady, older in manner and serious about duty, a Mars one as energetic and direct.

Treat it as one clue. Real relationships depend on far more than one planet, and Vedic astrology has other tools for them, including the seventh house and compatibility methods. If you want that wider view, our compatibility check looks at two charts together. The Atmakaraka and Darakaraka are also useful to compare: the first is who you are, the second is what you seek.

Why your birth time matters

The slower planets barely move in a day, so their rank is stable. The Moon is the exception. It travels about 13 degrees a day, roughly half a degree an hour, so a birth time that is a few hours out can change its degree enough to move it up or down the list. The result is also sensitive when two planets are close in degree, since a gap of a degree or less can flip their order.

If you do not know your time, the tool uses noon and tells you so. Treat the Moon's position as approximate in that case. The other six planets are reliable to within a degree for most dates, so the top of your list is usually safe unless the Moon is close to another planet.

In the first chart the Moon is at nearly 29 degrees of Sagittarius, so it leads, and the Sun sits barely past the start of Taurus, which makes it the Darakaraka. The second chart shows how close a race can be. Saturn at 28°21' edges out Venus at 27°36', a gap of under one degree. Its Darakaraka is the Moon at 1°31' of Libra, but the Sun at 3°59' of Leo is only about two and a half degrees ahead. Since the Moon moves roughly 12 degrees a day, a birth time about five hours earlier would have made the Sun the Darakaraka instead. That is exactly why an accurate birth time matters.

Find yours with the calculator above. When you have it, you can look up your Moon nakshatra or your Vedic Big Three, or ask Vedica what your Atmakaraka says about your life purpose. Vedic astrology has not been shown to predict events in controlled studies, so take all of this as a framework for reflection.

Questions people ask

What is an Atmakaraka?

The Atmakaraka (soul significator) is the planet with the highest degree inside its sign among the seven classical planets in your chart. In Jaimini astrology it represents the core of who you are and your central life lesson. It is found from sidereal degrees, ignoring which sign the planet is in.

How is the Atmakaraka calculated?

Take the position of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, look only at the degree each has travelled inside its own sign (0 to 30), and rank them from highest to lowest. The first is the Atmakaraka, the second the Amatyakaraka, and the last is the Darakaraka. The calculator does this for you.

What is a Darakaraka?

The Darakaraka is the planet with the lowest degree in its sign among the seven, in the usual seven-karaka scheme. It stands for the spouse or partner in Jaimini astrology, so people read it for the qualities they are drawn to in a relationship. It is one clue, not a verdict.

Do Rahu and Ketu count?

Some traditions use an eight-karaka scheme that includes Rahu, which then changes the order. This calculator uses the seven-karaka method, with Sun to Saturn, because it is the most widely taught. If your Atmakaraka matters to you, ask Vedica which scheme your teacher or book uses.

Does the Atmakaraka depend on my birth time?

Slightly. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so an uncertain birth time can change its degree and therefore the ranking. The slower planets barely move in a day. If the Moon is close to another planet in degree, an exact birth time matters more for your result.

What do I do with my Atmakaraka?

Read it as a theme. Each planet carries different imagery, for example the Sun for authority and purpose, Saturn for discipline and duty, Venus for love and beauty. Ask Vedica what your Atmakaraka in its sign and house says about your path, rather than treating the planet name alone as an answer.
