Free Vedic sign calculator

Vedic sign calculator: what is my Vedic sign?

Enter your birth date, time and place and see your Sun, Moon and Rising sign in the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac next to the sign you know. For most people at least one of them changes.

The offset fills in when you pick a place (for example 5.5 for India, -5 for New York in winter). Check it if you were born during daylight saving time.

What is a Vedic sign?

A Vedic sign is the zodiac sign a planet sits in when you measure the sky the way Indian astrology does. The system is called Jyotish, and its zodiac is sidereal, which means it is fixed against the background of the stars. Your Vedic Sun sign, Moon sign and Rising sign are the same three points you know from Western astrology, only placed in that star-based zodiac.

This matters because the two zodiacs no longer line up. If you were born in the first three weeks or so of a sign, your Vedic placement is probably the sign before the one you know. Born in the last week or so, and it probably stays the same. The calculator above does the sum for your exact birth moment and shows both answers side by side.

Why your Vedic sign is about 24 degrees off

Western astrology is tropical. It starts Aries at the March equinox and counts twelve equal signs of 30 degrees from there, so the signs follow the seasons. Vedic astrology starts Aries at a fixed point among the stars and counts twelve equal signs from that point. Both zodiacs were once the same.

The difference comes from precession. Earth's axis wobbles like a slowing top, completing one turn in roughly 26,000 years. As it wobbles, the equinox slides backwards against the stars by about 50 arc-seconds a year. The tropical zodiac moves with the equinox, the sidereal zodiac does not, and the gap that has built up between them is called the ayanamsa.

This tool uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India. For birth dates in recent decades it is a little under 24 degrees, and it grows by about a seventh of a degree every ten years. The planets themselves have not moved anywhere. Only the sign boundaries are drawn in a different place, which is why a single degree can decide whether your Moon is called Scorpio or Libra.

If you want the full comparison for every planet, the sidereal vs tropical page shows each one in both zodiacs, and sidereal astrology explains the system from the start.

How to read your Big Three

The Big Three are your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. Vedic astrology weighs them differently from the Western habit of leading with the Sun, so read the results in this order.

Moon sign (rashi)

In Vedic astrology the Moon sign comes first. It describes your mind, moods and how you react before you think. Daily horoscopes in India are written for the Moon sign, and so are the matching of couples and the timing of life periods. If you only remember one result, make it this one.

Rising sign (lagna)

Your Rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It sets the layout of your chart, with every house counted from it, and it describes the body, temperament and the way you come across. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time.

Sun sign

The Sun stands for your core identity, your sense of purpose and your relationship with authority. It matters in both systems, and it is the one you can find from the date alone. Read it as the centre of the picture rather than the whole picture.

When all three change, you may feel like you have been handed a different chart. A better way to see it is as a second lens. Notice which description fits your life better, and which one explains the things the first one never did.

Three examples, computed by our engine

These are real results from the same astro engine behind the calculator, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. The first column is the sign you would see in a typical Western chart, and the second is the Vedic sign.

BirthSun: usual / VedicMoon: usual / VedicRising: usual / Vedic
1 January 2000, 12:00, New YorkCapricorn / SagittariusScorpio / LibraAries / Pisces
20 August 1985, 18:45, LondonLeo / LeoLibra / LibraCapricorn / Capricorn
15 May 1990, 10:30, DelhiTaurus / TaurusCapricorn / SagittariusLeo / Cancer

The first row shows the typical case: every placement moves back one sign. On New Year's Day the Sun is at about 10 degrees of Capricorn in the usual zodiac, but at about 17 degrees of Sagittarius in the Vedic one.

The second birth falls late in Leo, with the Sun near 28 degrees of Leo in the usual zodiac. Subtracting about 24 degrees leaves it near 4 degrees of Leo, still inside the sign, so nothing changes. That is why some people see no difference at all.

The third is the borderline case. The Sun sits at 24 degrees of Taurus in the usual zodiac and just past the start of Taurus in the Vedic one, so the Sun stays put while the Moon and Rising both step back a sign. One chart can mix both outcomes.

How accurate is this Vedic sign calculator?

The positions come from a Swiss Ephemeris based engine, the same data professional astrology software uses. Planet positions are accurate to a fraction of a degree. The result is only as good as the birth details you give it, and the birth time matters most.

  • The Sun sign needs only the date, because the Sun changes sign once a month.
  • The Moon sign needs the date. A birth time helps on the one day in about two and a half when the Moon changes sign.
  • The Rising sign needs a birth time accurate to within roughly 15 minutes if you want to trust it.

If you do not know your time, tick the box and the tool uses noon and warns you that the Rising sign is a guess. Check the UTC offset too. If you were born during daylight saving time, use the offset that applied on the day, such as 1 for London in summer. We do not store your birth details for this tool.

Vedic astrology has not been shown to predict events in controlled studies, so treat the results as a framework to think with. When you are ready to go deeper, Vedica can read your whole chart, including your life periods, in plain words. Look up your nakshatra next, or compare your Atmakaraka.

Questions people ask

What is my Vedic sign?

Your Vedic sign is the sign a planet occupies in the sidereal zodiac, which is measured against the fixed stars. Enter your birth date, time and place above and the calculator shows your Vedic Sun, Moon and Rising. Most people find at least one of the three differs from the sign they grew up with.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Western astrology fixes the zodiac to the seasons (tropical). Vedic astrology fixes it to the stars (sidereal). Because of the slow wobble of Earth's axis, the two have drifted about 24 degrees apart. For birthdays in the first 24 days or so of a sign, the Vedic sign is usually the one before.

Which Vedic sign matters most, Sun or Moon?

In Vedic astrology the Moon sign (rashi) and the Rising sign (lagna) usually carry more weight than the Sun sign. Horoscopes, life periods and matchmaking are all built from the Moon and Rising. The Sun sign is still part of the picture, so read all three together rather than picking one.

Do I need my birth time to find my Vedic sign?

Your Sun sign only needs the date. The Moon sign needs the date and is right unless the Moon changes sign that day, which happens about every two and a half days. Your Rising sign needs a reasonably exact time because it changes roughly every two hours. If you do not know it, the tool uses noon and tells you.

Which ayanamsa does the calculator use?

It uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and the one used by the Indian government's calendar. Other systems such as Raman or Krishnamurti differ by a fraction of a degree, which only matters when a planet sits within a degree of a sign boundary.

Is Vedic astrology more accurate than Western astrology?

Neither has been shown to predict events in controlled studies, so we offer both as frameworks for reflection rather than proof. The practical difference is the zodiac they use. This tool simply shows your placements in the sidereal system so you can compare, and then ask Vedica to explain what they mean for you.
