Saturn return and Sade Sati
Saturn return vs Sade Sati: when do they happen for you?
A Saturn return is Saturn coming back to where it was at your birth. Sade Sati is Saturn's passage through the three signs around your Moon. Enter your birth details to see both timelines.
What is a Saturn return?
A Saturn return happens when the planet Saturn comes back to the sign, and then the exact degree, it occupied at your birth. Saturn circles the zodiac in about 29.5 years, so the first return arrives between roughly age 28 and 30, and the second between 57 and 60. Western astrology treats it as a rite of passage: the point where the structures of your twenties are tested against what you actually want.
Because Saturn slows down and moves backwards for a few months every year, it can touch your natal degree up to three times over a year or so. Many people feel the whole stretch, not one date. The calculator above shows the period Saturn spends in your birth Saturn's sign, and the exact pass falls somewhere inside it.
What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati ("seven and a half" in Sanskrit) is a Vedic idea. It starts when Saturn enters the sign before your Moon sign and ends when Saturn leaves the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each of the three signs, which gives roughly seven and a half years in total, in three phases: rising, peak (Saturn over your Moon sign) and setting.
The Moon stands for your mind, mood and sense of safety, which is why Saturn's slow pressure on it is read as a long emotional and practical test. It comes around about every 29.5 years, so most people meet two or three in a lifetime. It is counted in the sidereal zodiac, which is why your Moon sign may not be the one you know. The Vedic sign calculator finds it in seconds, and our method page explains where the positions come from.
Saturn return vs Sade Sati: how they differ and overlap
Both are Saturn transits, but they are measured from different points in your birth chart. The table sets them side by side.
| Saturn return | Sade Sati | |
|---|---|---|
| Measured from | Your natal Saturn | Your natal Moon |
| Trigger | Saturn back in its birth sign | Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd sign from your Moon |
| Length | About 2.5 years in the sign, the exact pass lasts months | About 7.5 years in three phases |
| Typical ages | 28 to 30, then 57 to 60 | Varies; two or three per lifetime |
| Theme | Identity, commitment, adult responsibility | Emotional pressure, patience, rebuilding |
They overlap when your natal Saturn sits in or next to your Moon sign, which is common. In that case a Saturn return can fall inside a Sade Sati, and the two themes stack. The examples below show one such case.
What people commonly experience
Reports are anecdotal, and Saturn periods have not been shown to predict events in controlled studies, so read this as a pattern of themes. People often describe a Saturn return as a reckoning: leaving a career that no longer fits, ending or formalising a relationship, moving cities, or taking on a role with real responsibility. Others notice little more than a growing sense of seriousness.
In Sade Sati the rising phase is often described as growing worry or workload, the peak as the heaviest stretch for mood, health and finances, and the setting phase as slow recovery. Vedic tradition says the result depends on the rest of the chart, and plenty of people report promotions, a first home or real maturity during it.
Practical guidance for either period
Saturn rewards steady work and punishes drift. Nothing here is a verdict, only a good reason to be deliberate.
- Build routines for sleep, money and health before you feel pressure, not after.
- Finish what you started instead of opening new fronts, and keep big commitments realistic.
- Be honest about what no longer works in your career or relationships, and change it in small, reversible steps.
- Keep a savings buffer and avoid risky financial leaps at the peak of a Sade Sati.
- Talk to someone you trust, or a professional, if the mood feels heavy. Astrology is not a substitute for care.
Some Vedic traditions add optional practices such as lighting a lamp on Saturdays or acts of service to the elderly. Treat them as personal ritual, not a requirement, and never pay anyone to remove a "Saturn problem".
Real examples: three births, three timelines
These dates come from our astro engine's Saturn sign changes (sidereal, Lahiri), applied to three real birth charts. Months are approximate to the day Saturn changes sign.
| Birth | Moon / Saturn | First full Sade Sati after birth | First Saturn return window |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 May 1990, 10:30, Delhi | Sagittarius / Capricorn | Nov 2014 to Jan 2023 | Jan 2020 to Jan 2023 |
| 10 March 1995, 12:00, New York | Gemini / Aquarius | Jun 2000 to Jul 2007 | Apr 2022 to Mar 2025 |
| 20 August 1982, 12:00, London | Leo / Virgo | Sep 2004 to Aug 2012 | Sep 2009 to Aug 2012 |
The 1990 birth has its Moon in Sagittarius and Saturn in Capricorn, the sign right after it. Saturn's stay in Capricorn is both the setting phase of Sade Sati and the Saturn return, so the two overlap. The 1995 birth shows the opposite: Moon in Gemini is far from Saturn in Aquarius, so the return and Sade Sati come years apart. Retrograde loops can split a window into two visits to one sign, which the dates above already include.
Where Saturn is right now and who is in Sade Sati
As of Oct 2026, Saturn is in sidereal Pisces, where it arrived on Mar 2025 and is due to move into Aries around Jun 2027. That puts three Moon signs in Sade Sati.
- Moon in Aries: rising phase, this cycle runs Mar 2025 to May 2032.
- Moon in Pisces: peak phase, this cycle runs Apr 2022 to Apr 2030.
- Moon in Aquarius: setting phase, this cycle runs Jan 2020 to Feb 2028.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a Saturn return and Sade Sati?
A Saturn return happens when transiting Saturn comes back to the exact degree it held at your birth, about every 29.5 years. Sade Sati is Saturn's roughly seven and a half year journey through the sign before your Moon, your Moon sign and the sign after. They are measured from different points in your chart and can overlap.
When is my first Saturn return?
Between about age 27 and 30 for nearly everyone, because Saturn takes around 29.5 years to circle the zodiac. Retrograde loops mean Saturn can cross your natal degree up to three times over a year or so. The tool above shows the dates that apply to your own chart.
How long does Sade Sati last?
About seven and a half years, since Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in each of three signs: the one before your Moon sign (rising phase), your Moon sign (peak phase) and the one after (setting phase). Retrograde motion can make a phase start, pause and restart, so the edges are approximate.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. Tradition describes it as a testing period tied to responsibility, delay and pressure, and its effect is said to depend on the rest of the chart. Plenty of people report growth or career gains during it. Treat it as a theme to prepare for rather than a prediction of misfortune.
Do both use the sidereal zodiac?
Sade Sati is a Vedic idea, counted in the sidereal zodiac from your Moon sign. A Saturn return works in either zodiac because it is Saturn returning to its own degree, so the timing is the same. Which sign Saturn is in on that date differs between systems, but the date does not.
How accurate are the dates?
The dates are Saturn's real sign changes in the sidereal zodiac, worked out by our engine to the day for 1930 to 2090, including retrograde dips back into the previous sign. Your Saturn return is shown as the whole time Saturn spends in your natal Saturn sign, not one exact-degree date.
